About the Myopia Calculator

The Brien Holden Vision Institute myopia calculator is designed to bridge the gap between research data and the end user. The tool shows the various management options / scenarios and demonstrates the possible benefits, over time, of starting to treat myopia progression.

The Brien Holden Vision Institute myopia calculator tool helps eye care practitioners, individuals and carers to apply the research based evidence for various management options and enables the practitioner to demonstrate and discuss risk versus benefit for individual cases.

This latest version of the Brien Holden Vision Institute Myopia Calculator requires users to complete a one-off registration to access it. This will enable us to better understand the number of users and allow for notifications about any updates to the calculator or advances in myopia management research. You can opt out of these notifications at any time and still continue to use the product.

The calculator is now available in 3 languages – Mandarin, Spanish, Hebrew  – and we are looking at  adding Vietnamese and Japanese. You can now choose your preferred language and switch at any time.

The updated version includes an ‘ethnicity’ option which allows you to switch between ‘Asian’ and ‘Caucasian’.

The updated Myopia Calculator can be used to estimate the annual progression of myopia with and without management using:

  • Age
  • Refractive error at presentation
  • Ethnicity

The estimated annual progression was calculated using data from the Brien Holden Vision Institute database (for Asian ethnicities) and published meta-analysis (for Caucasian ethnicity).

The estimated annual progression is enveloped by a band (the 95% confidence interval) which means that an estimated observation using the data sets is likely to fall within that band with 95% probability. The band increases in width for longer durations as the confidence decreases with longer observation periods.

Using the “estimated annual progression without management” as a comparison, the calculator can be used to determine the extent to which the risk of annual progression can be reduced with a specific myopia control strategy.
